UTI stands for the Unified Testing Initiative.
It's an industry-approved, not-for-profit app testing body, run for the industry by the industry.
It develops testing and de-fragmentation initiatives for the mobile industry, to provide a common testing standard for mobile platforms: initially - but not exclusively - Java ME.
Until June 14 2010, UTI was owned by Oracle (formerly Sun Microsystems).
For the 12 months prior to June 2010, Oracle and UTI were working together to complete the evolution of UTI as an independent industry initiative.
On June 14th that process was completed with the handing over of programme responsibility to UTI. With the appointment of its first Executive Officer, and the administrative and legal backing of Standards Organisation IEEE-ISTO this places UTI in a strong position to respond to the rapidly-moving market conditions.
Of course, Oracle is still very involved in UTI (and specifically its Java Verified programme) because it owns the Java ME brand.

Members of the UTI are:
AT&T
LG
Motorola
Nokia
Oracle
Orange
Samsung
Vodafone
These are also the members of the Java Verified programme.
Find out more about the members and what they do.
If you are an operator or OEM interested in protecting and developing the quality of Java ME apps, and would like to discuss becoming a 'platinum' or 'gold' member of the Java Verified program, then please contact us.
A Java Verified board member or the UTI Executive Director will then contact you to talk to you direct.

There are currently 2 programmes operating within UTI: Java Verified and JATAF.
We're working on developing other testing -related programmes / initiatives too.
Watch this space!
Our scope is to work together as an industry, to ‘raise the bar' when it comes to the quality of apps.
