Submission Portal - now improved

06/15/2010

We've just made some significant changes to the Submission Portal, based on your feedback over the past few months.

If you're already using the Submission Portal, you'll need to know about these.  We'll have sent you an email detailing them, but here they are again:

Change 1 - Submission Groups have changed to ‘titles' and ‘applications'
The old submission groups have been removed, as they weren't used very much and were a little confusing.

We've replaced them with the revised concept of a title
Within each title there will be one or more applications (a set of JAD/JAR pairs).

As a result, in the Submission Portal there are now three concepts to understand:

A title.
This is what we are now calling the application and all of its variants.
For example: "Magnificent Chess".
Often you submit several applications which are just different variants of the same application title.
That bunch of applications in the submission portal is now called the title.

An application.
This is the building block of a title.
For example: "Magnificent Chess for Nokia Series 40" or "Magnificent Chess for Sony Ericsson".

An application consists of two files: JAD and JAR.
When you look at the details of an application you can see that the portal brings out some data about the JAR file.

Applications within a title can be added, deleted or updated at anytime, and a new title is automatically created by uploading one or more new applications.

One major improvement is that only one diagram file and only one questionnaire is needed for all applications within the same title.

There is a new title details page that shows an overview of the title and provides navigation to all applications included within that title.

Unfortunately, it hasn't been possible to transfer the existing groups into titles (especially because all applications of the same title now have to share the same diagram and questionnaire).

This means that all existing groups currently within the Submission Portal have been removed.

Of course all submissions and applications remain intact and can be used as before.

To maintain the logical grouping, the submission names have been prefixed by the name of their former group.

Please note that most submissions are not part of any group, so there has been absolutely no change for them.

Change 2 - Pre-test function
The pre-test function (that checks your submission details are complete) will no longer have to be activated by you manually.
It'll be done automatically in the background at the time you submit your title or update your title.
We've now put all of the existing applications currently in the Submission Portal through the automatic pre-test function.

Change 3 - Defining which devices your application supports
The easiest way to define which devices your application supports and which should be used in the Java Verified testing can be done by using the Java_Verified_Devices attribute in the JAD file. For example: Java_Verified_Devices: Nokia N95, Nokia E71

If these specified devices can be found from the Java Verified supported devices list there is no need for manual selection of devices anymore.

However, please note: if you do not use the attribute, the pre-checker is currently a bit unstable.

We recommend you manually select the devices you want to test against, from the list provided within the Submission Portal.  We will be fixing the pre-checker problem as soon as we can.

That's it.

Risto Helin from Forum Nokia will be taking anyone who is interested through the Submission Portal live via webinar on Thursday July 1.
